The group is responsible for organising freight driving experience courses and some freight photo charters. This helps to raise funds for the continued restoration of the fleet. Details of such events appear below:
Friday 6th March 2026 – Teddy Bear Freight Experience
You will arrive at the Nene Valley Railway Overton Station for either a morning or afternoon session on Friday 6th March and participate in a short tutorial about what to expect from your day. The morning course will run between 8:30 am and 1:30pm, with the afternoon running between 11am and 4:30pm.
Once the theory is done and dusted the practical fun begins and you will be able to put into practice all you have learnt as you get to drive Class 14 No 9529 hauling a freight train over part of our 7 1/2 mile line. As an added thrill, you will have the opportunity to ride in a Brake Van when not in the cab of the locomotive and witness the Guard handling your very own freight train. You will also have the opportunity to visit Wansford Signal Box and witness the duties and responsibilities of the Signalman on duty.
This course is limited to a maximum of 16 people (8 in the morning and 8 in the afternoon), so early booking is advised. Each participant is permitted to bring a guest to ride in the Brake Van and other guests are welcome but will not be able to travel on the train due to limited space.
Saturday 21st March 2026 – Road Rail Transfer Photographic Charter
Step back into the working world of Britain’s goods yards with this special photographic charter recreating the transfer of goods between road and rail.
The event focuses on vintage road vehicles interacting with railway wagons, complete with re-enactors loading and unloading freight to recreate scenes from a bygone era.
Please note: this is a static photographic charter. No locomotive or train movements form part of the event, although normal passenger services will be operating separately (Freedom Travel tickets required to travel).
After a short safety briefing, the yard will be set with a range of vintage vehicles and staged cameos throughout the day, allowing photographers to capture authentic working scenes.
Photography will take place within Overton Yard and around Ham Lane, traffic permitting.
Start: 09:30 briefing, Our café will be open during the day for food and refreshments.
