Events

The group is responsible for organising freight driving experience courses and some freight photo charters. This helps to raise funds for the continued restoration of the fleet. Details of such events appear below:

Sunday 11th January 2026 – The last Standard 2

BR Standard No 78019 will be renumbered as 78064 for a day of photography

You will arrive at the Nene Valley Railways Overton Station on Sunday 11th January 2026 and participate in a short safety briefing by one of our members of staff.

We would like you to get the most out of capturing Steam on freight and so Standard Class 2 Locomotive No 78019 (renumbered as the last of the class No 78064) will be running at the head of our demonstration Goods Train throughout this event. The event marks a significant year for the class, with it being 70 years since No 78064 was built and 60 years since it was scrapped.

This opportunity takes place between Yarwell and Peterborough Nene Valley Railway (PNVR) Stations with run pasts through Wansford Tunnel, Wansford Station, River Nene Bridge, Castor Straight, Longueville Junction, and PNVR. Returning to Overton Yard in the mid-afternoon, there will also be cameos as the sun sets involving loading/unloading of goods and featuring period road vehicles.

Participants will travel to various locations in our Pacer unit

Friday 6th March 2026 – Teddy Bear Freight Experience

You will arrive at the Nene Valley Railway Overton Station for either a morning or afternoon session on Friday 6th March and participate in a short tutorial about what to expect from your day. The morning course will run between 8:30 am and 1:30pm, with the afternoon running between 11am and 4:30pm.

Once the theory is done and dusted the practical fun begins and you will be able to put into practice all you have learnt as you get to drive Class 14 No 9529 hauling a freight train over part of our 7 1/2 mile line. As an added thrill, you will have the opportunity to ride in a Brake Van when not in the cab of the locomotive and witness the Guard handling your very own freight train. You will also have the opportunity to visit Wansford Signal Box and witness the duties and responsibilities of the Signalman on duty.

This course is limited to a maximum of 16 people (8 in the morning and 8 in the afternoon), so early booking is advised. Each participant is permitted to bring a guest to ride in the Brake Van and other guests are welcome but will not be able to travel on the train due to limited space.
